Source code can be downloaded and used for free
Benefits: Lowered costs, increased reliability, increased security, high scalability
oScalability: The ability of technology to handle a growing amount of work in a
capable manner, or its ability to be enlarged to accommodate growth
Why is OSS given away?
Firms can make money selling support and consulting services for the software
To pull customers away from major players (i.e. Oracle, Microsoft)
To save customers money, which can then be redirected to other products sold by the
company

Using technology to pretend that something is real when it’s not
Virtualization: A type of software that allows one of two things:
oLets one computer function as if it were several different computers (each
virtual computer can run its own OS/software)
oLets several computers function as if they were a single computer (enables
coordination regardless of locations)

communicating directly with the hardware
