Three factors impacting the industry:
oThe Technological Push (telecom advances, tech convergence, the affordability
of computing, the ease of distribution)
oThe Business Pull (geographic diversification, teamwork needs,
interorganizational links, e-commerce)
oThe Regulatory Environment (increased competition, decreased regulation)

Modulators/Demodulators (Modems) can be used to send bits (zeros and ones, digital
data) over the analog waves of the telephone systems
Telecom is going digital!
At least 90% of our telephone system is digital
oWhy? Analog systems let in noise interference; digital systems still have noise
interference, but the noise can be removed → Higher quality, higher capacity
Bits per second is a measure of the capacity of a telecom line
Digital Media Convergence: The convergence (integration of voice, data, and video
(multimedia) in a digital format so that all types of data can travel over the same digital
paths
Because of digital media convergence, industries are converging
