○ Hollywood is a microcosm of society
○ Alger myth does not commonly exist- who you know/how you cheat, relentless, egotism
can create superficial success but not ethical success

● Came from large family in Kentucky, father was a contractor
○ Not rich but comfortable life
○ Still not highly esteemed because it involves manual labor rather than smarts
