Sense of time broken up (chapters are not in any chronological order) Emily grierson described as fallen monument: family fell from high social standing, viewed more as an object than a person by the town. Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care : seems like a burden on the town. A small, fat woman while the visitors stated their errand : described as not quite human. Taxes issue connected to emily"s inability to deal with death. Emily is unable to deal with/denies death. Community keeps stepping in to help emily: deals with the smell emanating from the house. Rude to do so b/c of chivalry. Incestuous/inappropriate relationship (emily kept under lock & key & acts more as matron of the family instead of as a child)
