Tissues = groups of specialized cells and cell products that work together to form specific functions. Four primary tissue types: epithelial tissues, connective tissues, muscles tissue, nervous tissue. Never exposed to the environment outside the body, Three basic components: specialized cells, extracellular protein fibers, fluid known as the ground substance. Extracellular fibers and ground substance form the matrix that surround the cells. Establish a structural framework for the body transport fluids and dissolved materials from one region of the body to another. Defend the body from invasion by microorganisms support, surround and interconnect other tissue type: classification of connective tissues, connective tissue proper is composed of many types of cells and extracel- lular fibers in a syrupy ground substance. These connective tissues differ in the number of cell types they contain and the properties and proportions of fibers and ground substance. There are two types of supporting connective tissues: cartilage and bone.
