Three primary criteria to classify a psychological disorder: statistically and culturally abnormal, abnormal: different from the norm. Normal distress is exempt: results in impairment of dysfunction distress. Has to be over 4 or 5 months long to constitute as abnormal. Dysfunction: impairs one"s ability to get along in life. Example: intense fear of heights: may not be dysfunctional to a personal in a rural setting, is likely dysfunctional to a city-dweller, classifying psychological disorders. Dsm (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders) Comorbidity - the simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in a patient: using diagnostic labels. Bring to mind the likely underlying causes. Discern effective treatment programs: anxiety disorders. May lead to: distressing, persistent anxiety, maladaptive behaviors intended to reduce anxiety. Physiological symptoms: heart racing, difficulty breathing, tingling in your hand, etc. Behavioral symptoms: thinking the worst case scenario will happen, leaving the anxiety provoking. Evolutionary adaptive: phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd)
