The governor: backgrounds: state legislature, other statewide office (attorney general, lieutenant governor, etc. In states with a stronger legislature, should the governor also be stronger to provide a check: gradual increase in representation of ethnic groups and women. Individuals who share common goals and are organized into member groups trying to influence policy: number has significantly increased over time, state economies have become more diversified, 77% of interest groups come from the for-profit sector. Why there has been a resurgence of the states: distrust/lack of confidence in federal government, watergate, state reform. Increased state responsibility for local governments: rise in state aid to localities. Interstate conflict: 2 sources: economic policies and natural resource policies (e. g. , states that are downstream, political corruption, decreases trust in government.
