Document Summary
Emergency-a dangerous event that normally can be managed at the local level. Disaster a dangerous event that causes significant human and economic loss and demands a crisis response beyond the scope of any single agency or jurisdiction. Hazard -circumstance that has potential to lead to an emergency or disaster: natural hazards caused by natural events, technological hazards caused by tools, machines, and substance. Preparedness- preparing to handle an emergency, minimize disaster damage, enhance disaster response operation. Ex: evacuation plans and stocking food and water are both examples of preparedness. Preparedness activities take place before an emergency occurs. Response- responding safely to an emergency eliminate/reduce the probability of occurrence. Ex: seeking shelter from a tornado or turning off gas valves in an earthquake are both response activities. Recovery- recovering from an emergency return to a normal system short-term=vital systems approximately two weeks long-term=stabilizes all systems, can take years. Ex: recovery includes getting financial assistance to help pay for the repairs.
