Election of 1800: election of 1800, alien and sedition act a. i. During the war with france, act made it a crime to conspire against legal measures of the government (riots, interfering with officers) made it against the law to speak or write anything wrong about the government illegal. a. ii. Made out to arrest republicans for speaking out against the war. Republicans then discussed bearing arms against the government: thomas jefferson was accused of being an atheist, and john adams was accused of being a tyrant. Jefferson won the election: by 1820, all free white men were able to vote. One didn"t just have to own land: jefferson reduced the military and judicial system. Signed legislation to end the slave trade on january 1st, 1808. Slave trade: louisiana purchase, paid 15 million for this territory which was sold by france. France was looking to get out of north america and focus on war in europe.
