ENC-3021 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Energy Brands, Russian Formalism, Rhetoric
Document Summary
Dialogue is what we need to understand meaning. Russian formalism (similar to richards)- you don"t look at the context around a piece of lit or text, just look at linguistic structure itself and that"s how you understand meaning. Syntax, grammar, etymology, dictionary standing of a word. Bakhtin believed you need surrounding context as well for understanding. Speaker says what they want, listeners interpret what they want, somewhere in the middle is where meaning is gleaned. Signs are a bridge between speaker and listener. Utterance once it leaves the mouth of the speaker, they cannot control how it is received/interpreted. Utterance - anything that comes out of your mouth that has meaning. Smallest piece of discourse that can be analyzed/carries meaning. Utterance begins when someone gives you the opportunity to start speaking; ends when you allow someone else to speak/respond. An entire series of books can be an utterance. A shoulder shrug can be an utterance.
