GLY-1102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Rudists, Paleogene, Deccan Traps
Document Summary
Primates only on earth for about 55 million years, Bipedal primates only around for about 5-10 million years. K/t or k/tp boundary short hand for cretaceous-paleocene boundary. Iridium just above boundary, used as a marker. Late triassic, e, m, l jurassic, e, l cretaceous. Very few sauropods left by end of cretaceous. Dinos did, birds did not, also marine reptiles did not. Timing is not clear, decrease in diversity could have started long before the 66 million yo mark. Numerous species present in cretaceous, at kt boundary, almost none, only one or two groups left. Rely on photosynthetic organisms, certain algae live inside them and photosynthesize for them. Few species survive kt, from only a few species they re-diversify, many species around today. Appear to be on the way out long before kt. Through mesozoic, most important reef formation, abundant in corals. May have gone extinct when seas get a little colder.
