Species in different places were different, every island had slightly different things. Islands a distance of 5000 km from others lacked land mammals, frogs, and toads. Noticed shape of turtle shells was different on each island of the galapagos; All finches seem to be related to a single species of african finch. The malthusian principle dictates that more organisms will be born than will be able to survive. If inheritance is true, survivors will pass on characteristics that make them able to survive. Those characteristics will be more pronounced in the next generation. Requires individuals in a pop to be varied. More offspring you leave, the more influence you have on the next generation.
