Geosphere- solid earth, underlying the atmos and hydros. Hydrosphere- liquid earth, includes oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwater, and glaciers. Inner core, solid, made of nickel and iron. Liquid outer core, iron and nickel (approxhalf radius of e) Crust- low density rock, 7-70 km thick, all we can sample. Instruments used to measure these waves are called seismographs. Motion is perpendicular to wave travel, cannot travel through liquid. Built up in1948, wanted to know whenever bombs were tested during cold war. P waves deflected, encounter interface-abrupt chane in density- they get deflected,speed changes in de(cid:374)sity, creates a zo(cid:374)e (cid:449)here p (cid:449)a(cid:448)e is(cid:374)"t detected. S wave shadow zones reveal where liquid is, outer core and such. Iron and nickel core only thing dense enough. In earths crust, most is oxygen, then silicon, aluminum, then iron. Heavy elements were bound to others, making them not dense enough to sink into center. Some redistribution of el due to partial melting.
