The basic purposes of policing in democratic societies are: The police mission: to enforce and support the laws of the society, investigate crime and apprehend offenders, prevent crime, predict crime, help ensure domestic peace and tranquility, provide the community with needed enforcement-related services, enforcing the law. The first purpose of law enforcement is to enforce the law. Collectively speaking, law enforcement officers enforce the law at federal, state, and local levels. Law enforcement officers spend very little time fighting crime : only about 10-20% of calls to police are ones that would end up in an arrest. Not only are le officers making sure others follow the law, they must follow it too: apprehending offenders. Law enforcement officers are also charged with apprehending an offender during the commission of a crime or immediately afterward: sometimes apprehension occurs only after extensive investigation, preventing crime. Law enforcement officers are also charged with crime prevention.
