A computer is a data processing device that performs 4 major functions. Types of computers: mainframe- computer with a higher capacity to support a large number of users, supercomputer- a computer designed specifically to perform heavy, complex calculations as quickly as possible. Designed to excel at performing a few tasks at most: embedded computer- a smaller version of a computer that resides on another device. Designed to perform a few tasks at very low power. Input devices: keyboards, mouse, scanners, webcam, microphone. The place where the computer stores programs and data that it is currently using: read only memory (rom) Permanent, nonvolatile storage which contains the instructions needed by the computer when it is first turned on. Processing: the central processing unit, is essentially the brains of the computer. Manages and controls all components of computer. Internal hard drive- reside within the computer and typically are as large as a couple of terabytes.
