Document Summary

Base units and sig figs: seven base units: length, mass, moles, time, temperature, current, light intensity, si units: meters, kilogram, gram moles, seconds, kelvin, ampere, candela, multiple units: ex. Nano: 10^-9: derived units: any unit built from the seven base units. Volume (length^3), force (mass*length / time^2), etc: significant figures. Without decimal: sig figs start at rightmost nonzero digit counting left: ex. 4980 has 3 sig figs (8, 9, and 4: 3100000 has 2 sig figs (1 and 3, 12345 has 5 sig figs (5, 4, 3, 2, and 1) With decimal: sig figs start at leftmost nonzero digit counting right: ex. Multiplying/dividing: count number of sig figs for each number, complete multiplication/division, round to number of lowest sig fig: ex. First number has 1 sig fig, second number has 2 sig figs. However, we now round to 1 sig fig to get 3: 1. 04 * 1 = 1. First number has 3 sig figs, second number has 1.
