Our choices, even personal ones, do not exist in a vacuum. Sex: refers to the biological differences between men and women and their role in reproduction (chromosomes, hormonal profiles, sex organs) Gender: describes the culturally and socially created differences that we see in the meanings, beliefs and practices associated with femininity and masculinity (social construction: poems, nursery rhymes and songs often accentuate the traditional differences between men and women. Men: diagnosed with a wider variety of physical illness, more aggressive on average, perform better on certain types of mathematical reasoning tests, athletic, short hair leadership. Women: more likely to be diagnosed with emotional illness, outperform men in the precision with which they perform certain manual tasks, use more parts of their brain at once, tenderness, love. Gender is socially constructed, meaning the culture creates it. Becomes adult male communication patterns that include greater interrupting, contradicting or boasting: girls have more cooperative groups.
