Document Summary

Western tradition: playwright is the "person to worship," actor is there to serve the playwright/audience. Of all artists in live theatre, the playwright is the one will be remember in history. Playwright is the concentrated voice of a culture or sub-culture. Playwrights do what is human (tell stories) but on a different level. The playwright is the most central (yet) the most peripheral figure in the theatrical event. The playwright"s work is independent and in isolation. Many writers feel like they have to be concentrated and go into this imaginary world of conflict, often like a shaman; go off be themselves to bring out the "spirits" Long ago: writers were often part of the production (and actor or producer) (shakespeare can be an example of this) (some even directed their plays) We all tell stories based on our version of the truth based on what we experience or observe.
