Document Summary

Grew out of practical needs for protection of skin from chafing by harsh animal skins. Formerly foundations (bras, shapewear), lingerie and loungewear were separate industries. Recently they have merged to form a single industry, intimate apparel. Innerwear, or the foundations industry, started after the civil war. It was catering to the fashion of the times (the bustle silhouette) Tiny waists created a need for constricting corsets. The roaring twenties ended the era of the corset. The requirement of minimized bust and hips required bandage-like bras and girdles. From the 30s on, women wore inner garments that molded their figures more gently. Rayon, introduced to lingerie in the 30s, allowed for softer, more comfortable garments. Nylon, a synthetic fiber softer and longer wearing then rayon and even more easily maintained, went one step further. Spandex, continues this trend today, used in body shapers that are comfortable and flattering to the figure. Been shaped like bandages and then cups.
