Document Summary
The women"s apparel business is a multi-million dollar business employing women"s taste and styles, to a growing global, economy, and to new hundreds of thousands of workers. It exists in a constant state of change, reacting on an ongoing basis to technology. It is an industry that thrives on change. The history and growth of the women"s apparel business, was closely aligned with the history and growth of the unions. Owners and workers were on opposite sides about pay, long working hours and dirty, dark, dangerous working conditions. Unions (ilgwu) was formed, but strikes in 1909 and 1910 started collective bargaining. The triangle shirtwaist fire disaster in 1911 brought great attention to the plight of workers and this began the growth and strength of the ilgwu. In 1995, the ilgwu merged with amalgamated clothing and textile workers union. The new union became known as unite, which stands for union of needletrades.
