Document Summary

So, there is the rigorous original derivation of h-w, but let"s also go through a slightly more intuitive explanation of hardy-weinberg. F (aa) = pq and qp = 2pq. As long as the conditions of hardy-weinberg are met, the population will remain at that equilibrium value. How reasonable are these assumptions for natural populations: (a) diploid organism with sexual reproduction, (b) random mating, (c) population size is very large (no sampling error), (d) no mutation, migration, or natural selection, (e) mendelian inheritance. The value of the hardy-weinberg model, then is that it provides a simple case against which to compare reality, i. e. deviations from hardy. Weinberg may provide evidence about what forces are acting on natural populations. So hardy weinberg is the baseline against which we judge deviations. The nature of these deviations may tell us something about the processes producing deviations.
