The first medical school was established in 1756 at the college of philadelphia. 1800 there were four medical schools in america. Georgia became the first state to restrict licenses to practice medicine to medical school graduates in 1821. This move was opposed by the apprentice-trained physicians. By 1847 most states had medical societies, and most of these became affiliated with newly formed. One goal was to improve education standards, including closing weaker schools.
