Document Summary

What were darwin"s two conclusions: the earth"s organisms are descended with modifications from common ancestors, the process in charge of these modifications is natural selection. Natural selection the systematic differences in survival and reproductive success of individuals with different genotypes and phenotypes. If variation is heritable, then the population is bound to automatically change. Directional selection favors individuals at one extreme of a phenotypic distribution; over time the environment changes and the graph shifts to one of the extreme sides. Stabilizing selection favors the survival of individuals with intermediate phenotypes; it"s stabilizing or in the middle. Balancing selection maintains genetic diversity; two or more alleles are kept in balance (one or the other is not favored); all versions of the trait are equal. Disruptive selection the fitness value of one genotype is higher in one environment while the fitness value of the other genotype is higher in another; the average or middle group is not common.
