o Less than 20 genuine chicken cups in the world
o Considered an absolute masterpiece
o Sotheby’s is the only market in which sold these chicken cups
o Called a chicken cups due to decoration of chicks and chickens all throughout the
cups
o It feels alive when touched
o Only type of Chinese porcelain that contains chicken design
o Single most forged item in Chinese art
o Used by the imperial dynasty
o Cups are 500 years old and are in pristine condition
o Enamel is sleek and shiny
o Sold for 38 million dollars
o Color use of chickens on the cup is very fine and the enamel is very sleek
o High fired porcelain, blue is under-glazed cobalt, and then painted over after
glazed (the colored paint is actually enamel and has the same glossy and glass-
like feel as porcelain); then this finished peace is fired over once more
o This ware was produced in an imperial kiln in Jingdezhen
o Most of the other 19 cups are on museum auctions, but only one was sold to a
private enterprise
o Chickens represent familial prosperity and family livelihood, great for the
imperial class
o Emperor Qianlong has used it, made in the Qing dynasty
o Artist is unknown
o Price of each cup is based on condition and provenance
o Hand-painted cupscould be different based on paintings and clarity of the cups
o The owner of one of the cups hired numerous workshops in Jingdezhen to
produce replicates of this cup in order to sell in Museums and gift shops
o Could have been originally used for drinking wine not tea
