o Reminder for those not on the Met Trip to plan a visit soon
o I you are not able to get to the Met in the next few weeks, please let instructor
know (there are other options at Yale, Princeton, MFA Boston, Newark Museum,
and other)
Today’s Goals:
o Animation of landscape painting
o Brush strokes and criteria for Chinese Painting
o Historical context of Northern Song paintings
o Major works of Fan Kuan and Guo Xi
o Practice Comparison
o Discuss visual analysis and description
Animation painting:
o Reading in the Autumn Mountain:
o The animation acts as a journey, just like landscape paintings, they make you go
through a vicarious journey
o There are details in the painting are more life-like when animated, unlike with 2D
perspective
o “to roam, to travel, to swim, to wander” is what the picture means, and the
animation helps to exhibit this idea
this quote is also found in many landscape paintings
Comparison:
o Western style verses Early spring
o In both paintings, there is a lot of detail, contrast, and depth in the foreground and
then little detail and more broad, hazy perspective going towards the top of the
painting
o Shading differences do exist between the two paintings: Western is brighter in
comparison while the Eastern Early Spring has more in depth shading throughout
the images depicted
o They both have a sense of realism and depict similar natural elements, like
mountains, trees, and people
o There is even attention to changes in nature in both paintings, such as dying and
decaying trees
o Both contain buildings and people, but the Western paining gives more attention
to those other elements while the Eastern painting allow those elements to blend
in rather than stand out amongst the very detailed trees and mountainous portions
of the painting
o The trees in the Eastern painting appear to be very harsh and unwelcoming, while
the Western painting contains that harshness in the trees but it is barely noticed
because of the depth of the Western painting and how it draws more attention to
the large mountain in the background
o The views of both paintings differ: The Eastern painting appears to have been
drawn from an aerial view while the Western painting has a more latitudinal view
