Basic emotion that humans have identified since ancient times. Preoccupation or worry that occurs in a person"s thoughts concerning expectations of impending harm and often exaggerated danger. Changes that occur in a person"s physiology in response to the experience of anxiety or stress (dry mouth, fainting, heart palpitations, sweating) Adaptive anxiety is reasonable given the circumstances. Maladaptive anxiety is unrealistically intense given the circumstances. A(cid:374)(cid:454)iet(cid:455) does(cid:374)"t have a clear cause a(cid:374)d fear has a sti(cid:373)ulus. Lion chasing somebody, lion would be a stimulus. Barlow distinguishes anxiety from fear in the following manner: Emotionally: the individual is overwhelmed with feelings of apprehension, terror or depersonalization. Physically: the person experiences significant shortness of breath, dizziness, racing heart, trembling, chills or hot flashes, chest pains. Cognitively: the individual thinks that he or she might have a heart attack and die, go crazy, or lose control. Attacks begin abruptly, usually peaking within ten minutes.
