causality works in both directions
Diathesis-Stress Model
a diathesis is a predisposition toward developing a disorder (inherited tendency toward
depression), stress is a difficult experience or any environmental factor that can trigger
the onset of a disorder
Risk Factors
events/circumstances that are correlated with an increased likelihood or risk of a
disorder and potentially contribute to causing the disorder
Premorbid History
a pattern of behavior that precedes the onset of the disorder
Prognosis
a predictable course; will they get better, stay the same, relapse
