Lecture note 22 PSY 308:
• Systems Theory
• an approach to integrating evidence & understanding the causes of psychological
problems involves a multitude of influences
• Reductionism
• attempts to understand problems by focusing on smaller & smaller units, viewing the
smallest unit as the true/ultimate cause
• Equifinality
• there are many routes to the same disorder (-duals pathways to an eating disorder)
• Multifinality
• the same event can lead to different outcomes
• Reciprocal Causality
• causality works in both directions
• Diathesis-Stress Model
• a diathesis is a predisposition toward developing a disorder (inherited tendency toward
depression), stress is a difficult experience or any environmental factor that can trigger
the onset of a disorder
• Risk Factors
• events/circumstances that are correlated with an increased likelihood or risk of a
disorder and potentially contribute to causing the disorder
• Premorbid History
• a pattern of behavior that precedes the onset of the disorder
• Prognosis
• a predictable course; will they get better, stay the same, relapse
