Dissociative and Somatic Symptom disorder
A dissociative disorder has a separation of mental processes such as thoughts, emotions, identity,
memory or consciousness, which makes us feel like a whole. It involves changes in consciousness or
self-identity. The person escapes reality in ways that are involuntary and unhealthy.
A Somatic Symptom Disorder includes having a significant focus on physical symptoms which
eventually causes major emotional distress and functioning problems. They show a pattern of
maladaptive behavior involving physical symptoms or complaints. It is possible that the person goes
on many doctor visits with the worst thoughts of his/her symptoms, eve when serious conditions are
excluded, which makes it hard to function.
The steps we could take, or possibly have taken, to reduce your risk of developing one of these
disorders depends on where the disorder comes from.
People with dissociative identity disorder, a major type of dissociative disorders, show often suffering
from sexual or physical abuse. Dissociative disorders often develop as a ways to cope with trauma.
