Mechanism
An assembly of moving parts involved in or responsible for taking an input motion or force and
transforming it to an output motion or force.
kinematics
A branch of engineering mechanics that studies motion without regard to the force or mass of the things
being moved.
dynamics
The branch of classical mechanics that is concerned with the effects of forces on the motion of objects.
lever
A machine consisting of a beam or rigid structure with a fixed hinge or fulcrum.
pulley
A wheel on an axle that is designed to support movement and change of direction of a cable or belt
along its circumference.
wheel and axle
A simple machine generally consisting of a wheel attached to an axle so that motion and/or force can be
transmitted from one to the other.
inclined plane
A flat supporting surface tilted at an angle, with one end higher than the other, used as an aid for raising
or lowering a load.
wedge
A triangular shaped tool used to separate two objects or portions of an object, lift up an object, or hold
an object in place.
screw
An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder, a mechanism that converts rotational motion to linear
motion, and a torque (rotational force) to a linear force.
