Nails get their hold from the friction between the nail and the wood. Nail size is determined through the penny (d: larger nail = higher penny number. Common nail standard nail for general construction: can be used in a clip for the framing nailer. Box nail slightly narrower than the common nail to prevent the wood from splitting: can be coated with adhesive to provide a stronger hold. Finish nail very narrow head so the holes can be easily covered: usually used in furniture construction. Double-headed nail (duplex) can be easily removed because part of the nail stays above the surface: used mainly in temporary construction like bracing. Have 2 legs that are driven into the piece of material and act like nails. Crown the top of the staple.
