Symptoms of Dementia (NCD)
- Virtually non-existent before 65
- At 80, about 33% of the population has dementia
DSM Criteria for NCD
- Significant cognitive decline from prior level of functioning
- Evidence for decline found either by self-report or during testing
- Cognitive decline interferes with independence or daily living
- Is not better explained by another disorder
Common Clinical Sequelae for NCD
- Mood disturbances common high lability
- Increased anxiety
- Unpredictable periods of intense agitation, and frustration
- Paranoia and delusional beliefs may emerge, but without disorganizations symptoms
Neurocognitive disorders
- Known pathology
- Biologically informed diagnosis
What is Neurocognition?
- Working memory anytime you are trying to hold and idea without losing it
- Attention/Cognitive control Ability to direct mind to focus on what you want
- Cognitive flexibility approach a problem in a different way, recognizing circumstances
have changed and one way of learning something is no longer viable
- Abstract representation ability to represent things in non-concrete ways. E.g. algebra is
a system of abstract representations of numerical quantities
