Substance Use Disorder: Description and Diagnosis

- Cost ~500 Billion
- Compulsion to seek and take a drug of abuse
- A loss of control in limiting drug intake
- Emergence of a negative emotional state when access to the drug is limited
Early Stage
- Goal-driven behavior
- Pleasure-based
- Drug “taking”

- Compulsive – regardless of known negative or unreasonable consequence, still do it
