Mary and susan live in two neighboring towns. Susan"s town is a party town, and everyone there drinks like a fish. But her biological father, who died when she was very young, was an alcoholic, and from him she inherited a strong predisposition towards alcohol abuse. As a function of the town her family happened to settle in, susan was exposed to alcohol at a relatively young age. Mary"s town is a dry town, and no one in her town drinks. But, mary inherited a genetic predisposition to try new things, and as soon as she"s old enough, she sneaks over to susan"s town to party. Mary"s case is an example of gene-environment correlation. She inherited a disposition, so her genes in some way shaped her environment. Mary"s case is an example of gene-environment interaction. Susan"s case is an example of gene-environment correlation.
