Learning vs memory: learning is the process of acquiring new information, memory is the ability to recall or recognize previous experiences. Cannot be sure if learning has taken place unless there is memory that can be elicited: memory trace. A mental representation of a previous experience. Corresponds to a physical change in the brain, most likely involving synapses. Patient h. m: h. m. had severe epilepsy, surgically removed the amygdala, hippocampus, and some cortex, post-surgery he had normal short-term memory but had severe anterograde amnesia. Retrograde amnesia is the loss of memories formed before an event (surgery, brain trauma, etc) Anterograde amnesia is the inability to form memories after an event.
