Document Summary

Drugs - chemical compounds administered to produce a desired change in the body. Psychoactive drugs - alter mood, thought, or behavior. Endogenous - occurs naturally within the body (e. g. neurotransmitters: taking drugs orally is safest, easiest, and most convenient (has the most barriers) Synaptic processing: most psychoactive drugs exert their effects by in uencing synaptic chemical signaling, agonist - substance that enhances the function of a synapse, antagonist - substance that blocks or decreases the function of a synapse. !2: drugs are exogenous but works the same way as neurotransmitters, medications that are accepted the body already has a receptor for the drug (heroine); the only way a exogenous drug works, the body already has a receptor. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (maoi) prevents the breakdown of monoamines at the synapses accumulation of monoamines and prolonging their activity. ^ oxidase (enzyme) breaks down monoamine and the inhibitor example of agonist hangs around longer in the synapse and increases the effect of neurotransmitter.
