How do we study sleep: eeg. Monitors the brain waves throughout the various stages of sleep. If you deprive someone of sleep, you go into rem sleep faster: this shows that rem stages are particularly important, rem rapid eye movement. Makes up about 25% of total sleep. Eeg output looks like wakefulness beta waves. Characterized by lots of dreaming, but not the only stage. If you disrupt rem sleep you can disrupt the consolidation process of memory.
