HLTH 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Myelin, Adipose Tissue, Digestion
Document Summary
Reduces heat loss through skin (thermal insulation) Provides mechanical insulation and protects organs from shock. Acts as an endocrine organ to alter metabolism. Tag comprises - 85% of stored energy in a normal adult. Our bodies have an unlimited ability to store energy as fat. Fat cells can enlarge up to 1000 times their original size. Tag is relatively anhydrous - it takes up less space than other stored energy. Complete oxidation of 1 g tag provides ~6x as much atp as oxidation of 1 g glycogen. Fat is a main source of energy for many body tissues. Heart, liver, and resting muscle prefer fat as a fuel source. Functions: spares glucose gat nervous system and red blood cells. When blood glucose levels are low, glucagon stimulates the breakdown of triglycerides (lipolysis) in adipose tissue releases fatty acids into the circulation for use by tissues. Lipids are essential for proper functioning of the nervous system.
