ENG 342RW Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Aran Islands
Document Summary
Abbey theatre was the only place where classes could mingle freely. The play became a loud irish debate not a riot against the play. Those who criticize their culture, embrace it more than others. Rioters became as much of the play as the play itself. Synge is more authentically at the heart of what he"s writing about he"s abandoning his privilege more than lady gregory or yeats ever did. ( side note: he fell got engaged to an actress who played pegeen) Syge went to aran islands to look for what he finds a projective of primitivism. Pegeen: thrilled by the lad at first, plays him up, then turns on him in last scene, disappointed he isn"t as great as he made. But mahon came in with bloody head, was no longer just a character in a story.
