Syntax Analysis Paragraph
Through the use of rhetorical fragments, exclamatory outburst, and even an implanted
sentence of surprising intelligence, the narrator of this excerpt portrays a teenage girl with gifted
intellectual ability but a juvenile mentality. By employing deliberate and precise syntax, the
narrator is able to hoax his or her audience into interpreting simple sentence structure as the
consciousness of a teenage girl. The very beginning of this passage strengthens this idea. Short,
unpunctuated sentences are used to enforce the idea that the times “four” and “ten” are of little
importance to the adolescent speaker. By implementing rhetorical fragments in the beginning
lines of this selection, the narrator makes it clear that the girl speaking is disinterested in time.
This alone insinuates a young and carefree speaker. Near the end of this excerpt, exclamatory
fragments are used to depict a teenage girl. The sudden and excited thoughts expressed in short,
exclamatory outburst insinuate the speaker is one that is young and animated. The length of these
outburst is also substantial. Short, deliberate syntax, such as “Looking up!” is peppered
throughout in the form of two-to-three word fragments. By using such phrases, readers are
allowed a glimpse into the consciousness of a teenager. Punctuated sentences force readers to
pause after each thought, but not for long, as the exclamation mark at the end of each pushes
readers onward in a hurried and excited fashion. In this way, the narrator mirrors the thoughts
and feelings of an adolescent girl with that of readers’ interpretations of this excerpt and its
