TONI MORRISON BELOVED NOTES, finished
“She got rosy then…” (132)
-What diction! Instead of saying “rosy-cheeked” or “She was glowing”, Morrison says
“She got rosy…” It’s just such a nice change of pace that I just can’t help but appreciate
it. Makes me think of more happier times, that’s for sure. I guess that’s why I like it so
much.
“…but she would have known it anywhere.” (138)
-I feel like this is the breaking point for Denver. Her mother has completely lost it, a
stranger has completely usurped her position as daughter, and now she has no one to
turn to. It’s interesting, really. I feel like these next few scenes are gonna have more
character development for Denver than the rest of the book combined.
“…her belly protruding like a winning watermelon.” (141)
-Why this? Morrison could have described Beloved in any other way. Why pregnancy?
It’s the epitome of femininity, and it certainly strikes a chord here. But I guess I don’t
understand it much. I feel like more emphasis could have been placed elsewhere. But it
still makes for a good thought process.
“Hear me. Hear me. Do it, Maker.” (146)
-Prayer, and redemption. At least, I hope. Now that I FINALLY understand the story in
its entirety, I’m really rooting for Denver. I didn’t care for her much before, but now she
is pivotal. Hopefully she can set Sethe free. But can she? Is it far too late? We’ll have to
wait and see.
“Beloved.” (156)
-The ending is equal parts closure and beauty. I really like it, even if the entire story
wasn’t as much of an easy read as the ending was. But I feel like Morrison did that on
purpose. Life isn’t easy, so why would this book be? I’m glad I chose this book to read.
