Document Summary

Section 10. 1: photosythesis harnesses sunlight to make carbohydrate. Photosynthesis is endergonic!!! (think cellular respiration is exergonic while photosynthesis is. Redox reactions produce sugars from co2 and light energy. Oxygen released in photosynthesis comes from water molecules. Photosynthesis includes two reactions: light dependent and light-independent (calvin: the calvin cycle cannot function if the light dependent reaction does not work. Transports electrons and connects light dependent and calvin cycle (p. 179) thylakoid = flattened sacs, grana = stack of thylakoids, stroma = liquid matrix. Pigments in chlorophyll absorb and reflect wavelengths of light. Two major classes of pigments in plant leaves: chlorophylls: green & blue reflected lights, carotenoids: reddish, orange reflected lights (found in carotenes & xanthophys) When photons strike chlorophyll, the photons become like electrons and move to higher energy level in cells. Photosystem ii feeds high energy electrons to an electron transport chain.
