Document Summary

Romantic love always has been the most important reason for marriage. All cultures view romantic love as a positive experience. Only heterosexual men and women experience romantic love. State of intense longing for union with another person. Experienced most strongly during early stages of romantic relationships. Produces physiological reactions (including changes in brain chemistry) Cognitive labeling of the cause of that arousal. Affection we feel for people with whom our lives are deeply intertwined. Experienced between close friends and family as well as romantic partners. All genders have desires from the sexual mating system (passionate love) and the attachment system (companionate love) Men tend to focus more on the sexual mating system. Women tend to focus more on the attachment system. Men fall in love more quickly and fall out of love more slowly. Historically, women"s status depended on romantic partner"s status.
