Definition: old is new-a return to older approaches to an art form. For jazz, a return to a swing and bebop type music vocabulary. Disenchanted by late fusion/commercial smooth jazz, american jazz: rediscovery of the masters critics and fans realize living legends of bebop, cool, and hard bop are still alive and performing around the world. The american jazz community/industry starts to embrace them more and a renaissance" of older styles begins. Old recordings re-issued by record labels jump starts sagging jazz album: re-issues and the jazz economy sales number. The new technologies of tapes and then cds introduce classic recordings to new and old jazz fans alike: wynton marsalis and the young lions. Led by wynton on trumpet and backed by a host of jazz critics, the jazz scene is flooded with young players who emulate the masters of older styles.
