Taking micro approach by learning about germanic culture has cross pollinated for better or for worse: language. Only thing we knew here was shakespeare. Catholics: people killed each other for 300 years, *germany is ripped in two. N germany: protestant: over germans got up and left and came to us (philadelphia, german. German immigration to us: came b/c germany: fucked up b/c of religion, east coast: filled, moved west to new open lands. Columbus ohio, cincinnati, cleveland, st louis, milwaukee. These locations are still profoundly german: lots of german beers, abolitionists/liberals when they got here, germans came here bc of religious chaos. Movies, tv, storybooks: faust assimilated into american life, america became dominant in telecommunications.
