Chapter 2 history, theory in anthropology lecture notes. People with high culture are richer, and of higher social class. People who have no culture , uneducated, illiterate, vulgar, crude, poor, rural. Cultural competence: absorbing, internalizing, imitating, expressing culturally appropriate behavior and interactions. People in a group, tribe, etc. have a common/ basic set of rules and norms. Not all people agree with, know or value the same things. Identical symbols can have different meanings across cultures. Systematic relationship between major institutions of cultures: economic, religion, kinship, education, medicine. Religion: men are commonly heads of religion, god and jesus are both men that christians worship. Medicine: doctor is heavily connoted with masculine qualities. Education: men are more likely to study math/science, women the humanities, in the past men were more likely to be sent to higher education. Ruth benedict: school of personality, decided that cultures had personalities characterized by greele figures.
