Pain disorder- true pain but for which psychological factors play an important role in onset, severity, or maintenance. In 1or more sites in the body that is association with significant distress or impairment. Anxiety focused on experience of the initial pain. Conversion- popularized by freud-> believed anxiety resulting from unconscious conflicts. Somehow "converted" into physical symptoms to find expression. Conversion disorder- physical malfunctioning such as paralysis, blindness, etc. or difficulty speaking without any physical organic pathology to account for the malfunction. Suggests some kind of neurological disease is affecting sensory-motor systems. Conversion precipitated by stress which takes form of a physical injury. Factitious disorders- faked disorder neither psychological or physical. Munchausen disorder by proxy or factitious disorder by proxy- parent makes child sick to get sympathy. Conversion disorders- more likely to seek neurologists or other specialists. Individual experiences a traumatic event; unacceptable unconscious conflict. Because conflict and resulting anxiety are unacceptable the person represses conflict; making it unconscious.
