Lex naturalis- precept or general rule discovered by reason by which a man is forbidden to do that which is destructive to his life. Law and right are to obligation and liberty. A law presents a restriction upon our action (a duty), whereas a right is the liberty to do. 1st fundamental laws of nature- seek peace and pursue it. 2nd branch of 1st law- by all means we can, defend ourselves. There is a beginning obligation to seeking peace, Use whatever means necessary to defend us. The natural right is contrary to the natural law. 2nd law- lay down the right of nature if and only if all others are willing to do the same. 3rd law: the law of justice, that men perform covenants made- derived directly from the 2nd law of nature. Who ensures the mutual renunciation of all things. Goal of people is to preserve life and get out of the miserable condition of war.
