Social forestry program is primarily development of firewood resources since shortage of domestic energy. Prevent soil erosion / silting up of tanks and reservoirs. Arrest surface run off of rain water from hillsides. Recharge springs treams and underground water aquifers. Young saplings on common lands are going to be ruined by uncontrolled grazing if local community is not committed to their protection. Combat ecological degradation and meet the basic firewood, fodder, and timber needs of the rural population. Main species to be encouraged was eucalyptus. Focused on private farm forestry and neglected communally owned forests from which the entire community may benefit. Eucalyptus fulfills fewer ecological functions than traditional tree species- cannot be browsed by animals, provides no fodder, produces no fruit or nuts, and is not favored as a fuel. Traditional agriculture in kolar: private versus communal ownership. Used good species mixture for diff things.
