Ways to reduce prison population: who goes in check, length of sentences x didn"t do anything here, good/gain time earned. Realignment places heavy burden on counties: counties provided funds based largely on past incarceration practices, counties developed county working groups to describe plans, alternatives to incarceration encouraged. Jail funding available through ab900: state took hands off approach to implementation and reporting requirements. Realignment caused sharp drop in prison population: but then it started to go up again so prop 47. Overall reliance on incarceration reduced: 235,000 inmates to 205,000. Probation workload increased in first 6 months: 23,000 new post-release supervision offenders. But recall : california must reduce prison population to 137. 5% capacity by june 2013, they were still too high. So far, prop 57 has not impacted population greatly. Corrections : the variety of programs, services, facilities, and organizations responsible for the managing individuals who have been accused or convicted of criminal offenses.
