Schopenhauer was partly contemporary to hegel and schelling, and indeed much of his life was marked by a titanic opposition to the idealistic phylosophy. It was not until after the death of the great ad-versatile hegel that schopenhauer became famous, especially in his last ten years. Schopen- hauer is a contemporary philosopher, both in the chronological and in the philosophical sense. Arthur (or arthur) schopenhauer was born in 1788 in danzig (germany), as the son of a merchant who wanted to make his son a great businessman. 1 philosophy in got- tingen and berlin, where he met fichte and schleierma- cher. In 1813, he presented his doctoral thesis uber die vier- fache wurzel des satzes vom zureichenden grunde (from the fourfold root of the principle of sufficient reason), which manifests the kantian origin of schopen-hauer"s philosophy. In 1813 and 1814 he held a chair in jena, from 1814 to 1818 he settled in dresden.
